The Honeymooners writer and Get Smart! producer would be worth a long obit just for his TV and film work. But he alsoÂ created the Mad Libs books, and cofounded Price/Stern/Sloan Publishing to put them out. The company became a huge supplier of point-of-sale minibooks.

Around the time the first “Mad Libs” book was published, Price/Stern/Sloan also experimented with a humor magazine called “Grump”. Nominally edited by Roger Price and composed in madcap late-night sessions in his apartment, it featured for-the-fun-of-it contributions by New York literati and a jaundiced, curmudgeonly view of nearly everything. One memorable inside-back-cover “PhotoGrump” complained of “JFK ashtrays, and similar junk ‘honoring’ the man”.
